The first ever WordCamp Philippines was held on the 6th of September, Saturday, at the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde. This also happens to be the first WordCamp in SouthEast Asia. WordCamp gathers the blogosphere of the Philippines to update them about the Wordpress blogging software and the latest blogging trends.
For the first half of the morning, the campers chose between 2 sessions: Either Blogging 102: Blogging and Beyond or Theme Development and CSS Power. I chose the latter session because it has a connection with my course. Mrs. Gail Dela Cruz shared processes and principles. Her lecture on Theme Development would’ve been better as a hands-on activity so inexperienced campers can follow. Nevertheless, I found her lecture informative.
The next half were break-away sessions where we again chose which lectures we want, one each from 2 batches. I first attended Blog Optimizing and Organizing then Blogging and Journalism. The first talks about organizing blog posts, usability over design and content, and optimizing web ads into your blog for maximum income. The 2nd lecture discussed how blogging and journalism complements each other, and the certain etiquettes.
Lunch was sponsored by Chowking. Spot.ph gave a cupcake for the cost of guessing what their secret recipe is. My best guess was human sacrifices (so the gods shall be pleased to endow awesomesauce into those desserts).
The afternoon session all happened in the main venue, the theatre. Matt Mullenweg graced us with the first speech for the afternoon. From his enthusiasm and how he even took pictures of the audience, I can see that he’s a friendly guy. He shared statistics of the Wordpress users around the world and in the Philippines; demonstrated the features of Wordpress 2.7 which will be coming out this November; and shared what will come after 2.7. Wordpress has a new software, called Buddypress, planned to be released by the end of the year.
The rest of the afternoon was for more speakers who shared web trends and the specialty of their company’s web services. I.ph in particular features free blog hosting with offline blogging services. There were lots of prizes given away or raffled off. I didn’t win any but each camper had a goodie bag to take home anyway. It came with a cd of free WP themes, plug-ins, wallpapers and the powerpoints used shown in during the morning sessions.
The last session had a forum for the audience’s questions to Mr. Mullenweg. A photo op with Mr. Mullenweg followed to end WordCamp. He encourage every camper to come infront for a group shot. Then he was available for individual shots.
The first WordCamp Philippines was pretty much a success. The event shows how much Wordpress cares for its community even in the Southern East.
